Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a holistic medical system that has been used for thousands of years. Hair thin needles are inserted at specific locations on the body which send signals to the brain to stimulate blood, oxygen, hormone and nutrient flow through the body.

Often acupuncturists will refer to "Qi", and the flow of Qi through the acupuncture channels or meridians.   There are different kinds of Qi in the body, some that have to do with immune function or the nutrition we derive from our food. The literal translation of Qi is vital air.  We can relate this to oxygen, essential for all bodily functions.

Natural Pain Relief

The main reason we have chronic pain in the body is a lack of blood flow and circulation to the area.  The blood carries all the essential healing nutrients the body needs to repair itself. Oxygen, anti-inflammatory agents, immune cells, hormones all travel via the blood.  Acupuncture helps stimulate the blood flow and activates the nervous system so it can heal. We can work directly into muscle fibers to release tension and stimulate particular nerve and Qi pathways to activate the bodies innate healing response.  Acupuncture also stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalins, which help regulate your bodies response to pain.

Featherstone Health Acupuncture - Your Path to Wellness

Preparing For Your Treatment

When you enter the treatment space, be aware that it is a quiet space.  Please use your indoor voice and no talking on cell phones.  Treatments usually last about 1 hour, a little longer for new patients.

It is best to eat something light within a couple of hours of your treatment.  Wear comfortable and loose clothing, or bring a change of clothes.

When you arrive for your first treatment you will fill out a comprehensive health history form.  The practitioner will ask some questions related to your health and may look at your tongue and take your pulse.  This is part of Chinese Medicine diagnosis.  If you have any questions, concerns or needle phobia please share them with the practitioner so we can make you as comfortable as possible.  Acupuncture can lower your blood pressure, if you normally have low blood pressure, be sure to hydrate well and take your time getting up from the treatment.

Acupuncture should not be a painful experience, however, everyone experiences the needles differently and has a different comfort level.  We encourage you to ask questions. We aim to make the session as relaxing as possible.  May people fall asleep during treatment!

Post Treatment

After your acupuncture treatment you most likely will feel very relaxed, it may feel like an altered state if your body is not used to the kind of deep relaxation that acupuncture stimulates.  You may feel energized soon after, or you may feel like going home and napping.  Whatever happens is your bodies own healing mechanism.  We suggest no vigorous exercise after a treatment, gentle yoga or a walk is ok.  Drink lots of water, acupuncture can stimulate a detox or healing response.  Avoid alcohol, coffee and cigarettes. Treat yourself well afterwards, acupuncture stimulates your bodies own healing mechanisms so don't negate the effects by doing stressful things to your body, mind and digestive system.
